The history of Rosenberg is interesting and distinctly Texan. Situated on Highway 59 roughly 28 miles southwest of Houston in the middle of Ford Bend County, the land that now comprises Rosenberg was originally settled in 1823 by some of the settlers who were granted land by Stephen F. Austin in 1823. However, it was neighboring Richmond that actually inadvertently caused Rosenberg to emerge as a city.
At the time, Richmond was confronted by the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway with a request to build tracks through the city. Richmond refused and forced the railroad to stretch three miles to the west. As a result, a crossroads was established in 1880 in what is now Rosenberg.
The town of Rosenberg is named after Henry Rosenberg, a Swiss immigrant who settled in the Galveston area and was, for a time, president of the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway Company.
Rosenberg enjoyed considerable growth from the late 19th century all the way up through the middle of the 20th century. By 1945, there were an estimated 3,457 residents and 128 businesses. Less than a decade later, those numbers had nearly doubled to 6,210 residents and 234 businesses. Growth remained strong over the latter part of the 20th century and the 2000 census calculated the population at 24,043.
Over the years, Rosenberg has relied on its land. The petroleum and mineral industries produce petroleum, natural gas, sulfur and derivatives like clay, salt, gravel, and sand. Farming has always been an important staple in Rosenberg and rice, sugar, livestock, cotton, pecans, feed, and vegetables have been quite popular for years.
Today, the Rosenberg population is estimated to be around 34,468 – which is a 43.4 percent increase since the beginning of the 21st century. The median resident age is 31.6 years old, which is almost three years younger than the state of Texas median age. The female to male ratio is roughly 52 to 48 percent.
The estimated median household income in Rosenberg is $48,058, which is up from $35,510 in 2000. The estimated per capita income is just $20,566. By no means is Rosenberg a wealthy town, but the economic standing of its residents has improved over the past couple of decades.
Part of the reason the median household income is lower in Rosenberg than in other parts of the state is that much of the workforce isn’t highly educated. While 74.6 percent do have high school diplomas, less than 13 percent have a bachelor’s degree. Graduate degrees are incredibly rare, with only 3.3 percent of residents having one.
Rosenberg is predominantly Hispanic, with 59.6 percent of residents identifying as such. The remaining breakdown is as follows: white (25.1 percent), black (11.6 percent), and Asian (2.3 percent).
According to the Areavibes Livability index, Rosenberg is one of the better places to call home in the Greater Houston area. It gets a 79 rating, which is higher than both the state of Texas (69) and the country as a whole (66). Rosenberg receives excellent scores on categories like amenities, cost of living, crime, education, and weather. The only two less than satisfactory grades belong to employment and housing.
There’s a lot of diversity in the Rosenberg workforce. Many residents work in the city and many more travel into Houston or one of the other surrounding towns for work. Among male workers, construction, retail trade, and manufacturing are the three most common industries. For female workers, health care and social assistance, educational services, and retail trade are the three most popular industries.
When you study Fort Bend County as a whole, the top eight employers employ nearly 12,000 people. They are as follows: Fluor Corporation, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, Schlumberger Technology Corporation, United Parcel Service, Oak Bend Medical Center, Nalco Company Energy Services Division, Frito-Lay Inc. and Texana Center.
Residents of Rosenberg are served by the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District. The district has several elementary schools: Arredondo, Bowie, Jackson, Taylor Ray, and Travis. A handful of nearby Richmond elementary schools serve small portions of Rosenberg as well. Portions of Rosenberg are served by Wessendorf Middle School, Lamar Junior High School, Lamar Consolidated High School, Navarro Middle School, George Junior High School, and B.F. Terry High School. There are also a handful of private schools.
While GreatSchools gives Rosenberg just a 5 out of 10 on their rating scale, many of the individual schools in the district grade very highly. Taylor Ray Elementary School (9), Henry Wertheimer Middle School (8), Jackson Elementary School (8), and Lamar Junior High School (7) are among the best.
You don’t have to venture all the way into downtown Houston to find something to do. There are plenty of attractions in and around Rosenberg for the entire family. Check out a few of them:
- Brazos Bend State Park. Just southeast of Rosenberg is Brazos Bend State Park, a 5,000-acre paradise for bikers, hikers, bird-watchers, campers, and stargazers. There are more than 300 species of wildflowers, hundreds of different mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, and beautiful hardwood forests with breathtaking marshes. You could easily spend a whole day here and still come back for more.
- Constellation Field. Located in nearby Sugar Land, Constellation Field is home to the Sugar Land Skeeters – an independent professional minor league baseball team. It’s cheaper than traveling into town to the see the Astros play, and still a lot of fun for the kids.
- Rosenberg Railroad Museum. Are you a fan of trains and railroads? The Rosenberg Railroad Museum pays homage to the town’s humble beginnings and features a miniature train riding exhibit, museum gallery, observation platform, gift shop, and more.
Like much of the country and state, the Rosenberg real estate market has been heating up over the last couple of years. According to Neighborhood Scout, the median home value is currently $128,973, while the average rental rate is $987 per month. The majority of properties are single-family (59.8 percent), while 24.6 percent are considered apartments. Overall, Rosenberg residential real estate has appreciated 77.5 percent this century (an average annual rate of 3.38 percent). According to Realtor.com, the median listing price for homes currently on the market is $266,000 ($101 per square foot).
